The founding of St John’s Monastery, Mutholy was the realization of the long-cherished dream of the people of the locality and the parish priests of the neighbouring parishes. It was the last in the series of the monasteries founded by St Kuriakose Elias Chavara. On May 8, 1869 Fr Cheriathu Karupuzhackal, the parish priest of Cherpunkal and Fr Ouseph Thayil, the parish priest of Pala submitted a petition to Bishop Leonard to start a monastery somewhere in between Bharananganam and Punnathura. On November 11, 1869 Fr Chavara and Fr Gerard OCD visited Mutholy and saw the proposed site for the Monastery. It was the Mannoor family that donated the Mutholy hill for the purpose. In January 1870 the foundation stone was laid by Fr Philip OCD, the Pro – Vicar Apostolic. In 1873 a portion of the Monastery was completed and on November 24, 1878 on the feast of St John of the Cross, the Monastery chapel was consecrated. In 1902 the house was declared a Monastery. On November 27, 1904 the new Monastery Chapel was blessed by Bishop Mathai Makkil, the Apostolic Vicar of Changanacherry. In 1912 the scholasticate of the congregation was started at Mutholy and continued to function till 1918 when it was shifted to Chethipuzha. In 1926 the novitiate of the congregation was shifted from Ampazhakad to Mutholy and it continued so till 1944. In 1945 the Present church was built by the then Prior Fr Kurian Palackal. In 1955, Mary Queen’s Aspirants' House was started. In 1918 an English Middle School was started and later in 1922 it became a full-fledged Middle School and in 1948 a High School. A boarding house for boys was started in December 1980 in the first floor of the old school building and then shifted to the new building in 1982. In 1984 the old school building was rebuilt but later in 2016, the whole school along with the newly sanctioned higher secondary section was shifted to the new building cum campus by the Mutholy-Kodungoor road, near Mutholy Kadavu for better convenience and greater prospects.
